Video: Tips For Reading At HomeReading At Home - An Essential Part of Learning To Read!
One of the most exciting things about Grade 1 is that this is the year when many students learn how to read. Learning how to read is a complex process, but one simple fact is true: the more we read, the better we become at reading! Parents and families have an important part to play in teaching children to read. The most important thing you can do at home is make time for reading each day. Our school has a home reading program. Children take home a book at their level that they can read to their families. Each week, we visit the school library and choose a book or two to take home for family read-alouds. |
Reading Strategies Tip SheetInvented Spelling - "Cn u rd ths?"Check out this great article on invented spelling. Here's an excerpt:"...parents would never forbid a child from speaking until he could pronounce each word perfectly. Instead parents encourage early speaking attempts and reinforce correct pronunciations. Phinney suggested that parents do the same with early writing - encourage children to write often and be accepting of their attempts."
The Mechanics Of Writing
Learning to print letters properly is not a part of the grade 1 curriculum. However, knowing how to do this is a valuable skill! If students can print letters quickly and accurately, it frees up mental energy for thinking about what to write, not just how to write it. We incorporate some printing practice as part of quiet transition time and small-group instruction. You can help your child develop this skill at home, too! We use the verbal path for formation of letters to help students develop fluidity with writing. Download and print the following pages for at-home printing practice.

Research proves it, but common sense would tell you the same thing: the more we read, the better we become at reading!
Thank you for taking the time to read at home with your child each night. Sometimes we are unable to do book exchanges. Thanks for being flexible! If your child is not bringing a book home regularly, or keeps bringing home the SAME book, please check in with me. A few students are forgetting to take their books out of their backpacks.
If your child forgets his/her book or does not bring home a book to read, please continue to read anyway. You can read a library book together or revisit an old favourite from your bookshelves at home.
